Squidoo Tip #51: Forget the Competition

I’m always a little surprised when someone says they’re afraid to make a lens about a topic that’s been covered before. I rarely check to see if a topic I want to write about has already been covered; I just do my own thing.
This isn’t to say looking at what others have already done is a bad idea. But I wouldn’t do it with the mindset of, “I won’t make a lens about this if someone else already has.” Instead, it’s better to think in terms of, “Is there something new or unique I can bring to this topic?”
Imagine a world where no one tried to compete with each other. Apparently there’s enough room for PCs, Macs, and Linux boxes. There’s also room for McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s. As if that weren’t enough, there’s a dizzying array of toothbrushes to choose from at the grocery store.
Don’t worry about coming up with a 100% original idea. Just concentrate on topics you love to write about.

I agree with this advice.
I compete in many areas on the Internet with thousands of competitors, not just a handful.
If I find a site with no competition for what I’m promoting, I get the feeling that it’s the wrong audience for me.
I don’t mind at all competing with other lensmasters, but if I find a great lens on a topic I don’t want to write about, I’m happy to link to it.
Act on your dream!

Hi John - Yes, sometimes if there’s little or no competition in a particular topic… that could just mean there’s no audience.
